The top cut-out is shaped to grip canoe gunnels firmly, keeping the boat from shifting laterally on the roof, while the non-skid bottom holds the block in place on bare roof surfaces without scratching the paint. The universal bottom cut-out fits round, square, and most factory oval load bars, so these work equally well with or without a roof rack system installed.
