The hexagonal node pattern is the foundation of what makes the Switchback work. Each node is moulded from dual-density Axiotomic foam, with a supple outer layer for comfort and a resilient core for support, and the hexagonal geometry allows the nodes to nest tighter when folded, producing a packed size that's meaningfully smaller than a conventional foam pad at the same thickness. The taller nodes also create more uncompressed space for sleeping bag insulation to loft into, trapping warmth around the body more effectively. A metalized thermal reflective film layer adds another layer of heat retention, contributing to a three-season R-value of 2 without adding significant weight.

At 14.5 ounces, the Switchback works as a standalone pad for ultralight backpacking and canoe tripping across Canada, and it pairs well under an air pad for additional insulation in colder conditions.
